Our IB DP1 students learned why it is important to have a one standard system of measurement.
During their Physics class, the students were divided into two different teams where they were tasked to measure weight and length using different systems of measurement. One team used wood for measuring length and legos for measuring weight, while the other team used a block for measuring length and dice for weight. After recording their measurements, they were asked to exchange their readings and interpret the other team’s recordings. Unfortunately, they were not able to understand the other team’s recordings because they used different systems of measurement.
At the end of the activity, our students understand why it is important to only have one standard of measurement. The International System of Units (SI), commonly known as the metric system, is used universally as a standard of measurements.
